Christien Meindertsma's work explores the connection between raw materials and everyday products that surround us, revealing a network between source and consumer that has become increasingly invisible. Her book PIG 05049 (2007) documents all the products made from a single pig. She meticulously categorized and photographed each of the 3,267 items. Meindertsma's first work was a book called Checked Baggage (2004), in which she purchased a container filled with a week's worth of objects confiscated at security checkpoints in Schiphol Airport. Through her work, Meindertsma seeks to reveal processes that have become distant in industrialization and encourages a deeper understanding of the materials and products that surround us. Careful investigation and documentation are key themes in her work, which often focuses on local production and underexplored resources. In some cases, her investigations lead to commercial products, while in others, the result is simply a record of the process itself. Through her thorough exploration of the life of products and raw materials, Christien Meindertsma sheds light on the complex relationships between them.
